When Taking Blood Pressure
These may affect your bp reading.
When taking blood pressure. Put the cuff on following the instructions that came with your monitor. According to the self measurement of blood pressure method it is recommended that you measure it three times a day for 3 days before the visit to your doctor to assess the evolution. Do not take a bp reading in an arm that is injured or has an iv or shunt. Rest quietly for 5 minutes before you take your bp.
Right upon waking up before breakfast and taking medication before lunch before dinner. If you are anxious or uncomfortable this will make your blood pressure rise temporarily. Make sure you are relaxed and comfortable. Do not check your blood pressure within 30 minutes of smoking drinking coffee or exercising.
Certain conditions can cause blood pressure to spike temporarily. The pressure in the cuff is increased rapidly to 30 millimeters of mercury above the point that no blood flow is taking place through the cuff when no sound can be heard in the stethoscope or when a pulse can no longer be felt in the wrist. A cuff that is too big will cause a falsely low blood pressure. Avoid factors that can increase blood pressure.
Your left arm should rest comfortably at heart level. When you are taking your reading keep still and silent.
